James “Jim” Lynn Tveit, 79 of Ellendale, ND died October 12, 2023 at Sanford USD Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD. Jim was born to Iver Lynn and Lola Mae (Nicholson) Tveit in Aberdeen, SD on May 27, 1944. He and his family worked on Crabtree’s farm until 1948 when they moved to Ellendale, ND, living with Grandpa Nicholson for a period of time. In 1950 they purchased the “Dan Hunt Pasture” and began creating Spring Water Ranch. Jim attended Country School and later went to school at Forbes where he graduated from high school. During his Junior year, he was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Forbes. He attended Molar Barber College and apprenticed at Lidgerwood, ND with Wollitz Barber Shop. On September 27, 1964 Jim and Karen Hart were married at Forbes Bethlehem Lutheran Church and moved to Lidgerwood, ND. In 1966, Jim was drafted into the US Army. After basic training he was deployed to Munich, Germany where he remained until he was honorably discharged in 1968. After Jim and Karen arrived home from Germany, Jim purchased Ashmore Barber Shop, where he barbered until he developed back injuries. At that time, he went to Northern State College in Aberdeen and received his Realtor Sales License and began driving part time as a rural mail carrier. He later became a full time USPS mail carrier for many years until his retirement. Jim died October 12, 2023 with cancer and pneumonia complications. During Jim’s early years he was very active in the Civic Association, Ellendale American Legion, Ellendale Fire Department, and Ellendale Golf Club. He loved hunting and fishing but most of all, loved his son, Charlie and his grandchildren who were very special to him. He was very close to them and always looked out for them no matter how old they got. He was always there for them and if they needed something, Grandpa Jim could always be depended on to help. On Sunday mornings he would sit at his desk, pay bills, and listen to Pastor Salem and “His Precious Moments songs by Alan Jackson.” Jim leaves his wife, Karen Tveit of 59 years, one son: Charlie (Nicole) Tveit, Aberdeen, SD, five beloved grandchildren: Christopher Tveit , Aberdeen, SD, Cymbria (Caleb) Victor, Lynchburg, VA, Adisyn Leslie and Owen Thomas residing at home in Aberdeen, SD; one brother: Bruce (Jodie) Tveit, Chilton, WI; one sister: Joan Hoffman, Jamestown, ND; two sisters-in-law: Margaret Guedesse, Belfield, ND and Gail (Jerry) Klipfel, Ellendale, ND and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves his special pets: Prof, Boba, Sage and Hey Hey who liked to stay in Ellendale because they always got special treats. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Iver and Lola Tveit, his in-laws: Harding and Edna Hart and two brothers-in-law: Kent Hart and Larry Hoffman. Jim’s funeral is 10am Tuesday, October 17, 2023 at Zion Lutheran Church, Ellendale with Pastor Paul Preus officiating. Visitation is 3-5:30pm Monday with a prayer service beginning at 5:30pm all at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. Burial is at Ellendale City Cemetery with Military Honors. The funeral will be live-streamed on Jim’s obituary page at hovenfuneralchapel.com. It was Jim’s request that everyone dress casual and comfortable. Arrangements by Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale.
