Eugene "Gene" Smith

Eugene “Gene” Smith, 93 of Monango, ND died April 10, 2022 at Benedictine Living Center, Ellendale. He was born June 24, 1928 to Ole and Mae (Brotherton) Smith in Forbes, ND. Gene was educated at rural schools and then began farming with his father and brothers, Kenneth and Kermit. He was in a partnership with his brother Kermit in farming and owning and operating the Oakes Sale Barn. On June 27, 1955 Gene married Ann Ketterling in Aberdeen, SD. They made their home on the Smith family farm where they resided until 1993. They then moved a mile south of the farm where they resided and Gene continued helping on the farm until age 91. Ann died April 1, 2012. Gene enjoyed playing pool, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, gambling trips and his work on the farm and the Oakes Sale Barn. Survivors include Gene’s children: Tim Smith & Marie Bopp, David & Angie Smith, Peggy Smith, Harley Smith; six grandchildren, Amber (Jason) Miller, Austin (Jasmine) Smith, Allyssa (Thomas) Moch, Cody (Abbie) Smith, Justin (Sara) Smith, Emily (Jacob) Lux and 17 great grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers Kenneth and Kermit; sisters Verda Knox, Lorraine Houghton, Shirley Maguire and one infant sister, Earlda Smith. The funeral service will be 1pm Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale with Pastor Kelly Riggan officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to the funeral service on Tuesday.
