Mass of Christian Burial for Angela Mastel, 93, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at St. Helena’s Catholic Church in Ellendale, ND. The Rev. Patrick Parks will be officiating. Visitation will be on Monday, June 12, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., followed with eulogies at 6:30 and a wake/prayer service at 7 pm at Hoven Funeral Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be live streamed here on Angela's obituary page.
Angela, daughter of Kasper and Eva (Gross) Schatz, was born in rural McIntosh County, ND, on January 18, 1930. She attended a one-room rural school through the 8th grade. Angela graduated from Zeeland High School, and received her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD, in 1972.
She married Aloys Mastel from Hague, ND, on September 29, 1952, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Zeeland, ND. They moved to a farm 16 miles north of Zeeland where they operated a grain and dairy farm. In 1968 they bought a farm near Ellendale and continued their farming operations.
Important to Angela were her family, her church, and education. Love of family induced her to make quilts - each of her children has several of them, as do her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with whom she enjoyed spending quality time as often as she could. Angela created many quilts for Dickey County Relay For Life fundraising, as well as for Veterans. She enjoyed playing cards (especially pinochle) with family and friends, as well as sewing clothes, assembling jigsaw puzzles, reading good books, and traveling to quilt-shop-hops in the midwestern states. Throughout her life, Angela attended church and was a volunteer and Circle member, also serving on administration committees. She taught religion classes several years, and served as a Eucharistic Minister.
Angela retired after teaching school for 25 years, teaching in a one-room public school near Wishek, ND, and on a Hutterite Colony near Ellendale, interspersed with being a stay-at-home mother and co-farm owner.
Angela and Aloys found time to travel. They experienced cities like Frankfurt and Rome while visiting Europe twice, and Mexico City while in Mexico. They enjoyed travel throughout the United States, touring half the states, and spent time in Canada.
In 2017, Angela and Aloys retired from farming and moved to Ellendale. In October of 2021, Angela moved to Riverview Place in Fargo to be nearer to her children and medical facilities. In December of 2022, she moved to Bethany on University, a skilled nursing center where she was residing at the time of her death on June 5, 2023.
She is survived by seven of her children: five daughters Marilyn (Duane) Baer, Conifer, CO; Bernadette McNeil, Fargo, ND; Monica (Robert) Dale, Aurora, CO; JoAnn (Francis) Brager, Maple Grove, MN; Annette (Peter) Groves, Devils Lake, ND; and two sons Dr Glenn (Dr. Marit Hordvik) Mastel, Fargo, ND; and Wayne (Dr. Felisa) Mastel, Wahpeton, ND; 19 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Barbara Zacher, Marianne (Walter) Brandner; and three brothers: Uncle Matt (Schatz), Joseph (Julie) Schatz, and Thomas Schatz.
She was preceded in death by Aloys, her husband of 65 years, on December 5, 2017; son, Lloyd; son-in-law Roger McNeil; her parents; two infant brothers, Aloysius and Kasper; sister Ida Engelhardt and her husband Joe; brother Leo and his wife Cathy; brother-in-law Al Zacher; sister-in-law JoAnn Schatz; nephews Billy Zacher and LeRoy Zacher, and niece Bonita Schatz. Also preceding her in death were her parents-in-law and several members of the Mastel family.
Casket bearers will be her granddaughters and their spouses. Internment will be at St. Helena’s Cemetery, Ellendale ND, alongside her husband. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Angela’s favorite charities: St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, St. Joe’s Catholic School, Devils Lake, ND or Dickey County Relay For Life.
