Wayne James Steinwand, 74, of Merricourt, ND died September 4, 2015 at his home. He was born October 2, 1940 to Gottlieb “Jeff” and Helen (Klima) Steinwand and was raised in the Merricourt, ND area. He graduated from Edgeley High School in 1958. After attending State Normal and Industrial College, Ellendale, Wayne returned home to help on the family farm. On September 30, 1960 Wayne married Iris Brandenburger of Forbes, ND at Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale, ND. Wayne worked for Ralph Washburn as a butcher until the spring of 1961. They lived on various farmsteads until Wayne & Iris purchased their current farm in 1965, where he farmed his entire life.Wayne served on the local Farmers Union Board of Directors, Whitestone Township Board, Merricourt Fire Department and was a member or the Sons of American Legion, Herman Schlinker-Post #137. He enjoyed fishing, including tournaments with his loving wife, hunting, bow hunting, trapping, bowling, watching his grandchildren grow, telling many stories especially of his growing up in Merricourt. He loved to dance and in his younger years was a pitcher for the Merricourt baseball team.Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Iris Steinwand of Merricourt, ND, four children: Renae (Gregg) Ulmer of West Fargo, ND, Marlon (Colleen) Steinwand of Merricourt, ND, Loreli (Gary) Hokana of Ellendale, ND, Clete (Michelle) Steinwand of Monango, ND; 10 grandchildren: Travis Ulmer, Nicholas (Rachel) Ulmer, West Fargo, ND, Brandon Hokana (special friend Misty Olds), Ayr, ND, Trevor Hokana, Tyler Hokana (fiancée Kelsy Burley), Ellendale, ND, Tameka, Tyra, Alea, and Shaya Steinwand, Merricourt, ND and Summer Steinwand, Monango, ND and 2 great grandchildren: Maxten and Azlyn, West Fargo, ND; one sister: Angela (Ray) Peda and their children Chad and Kari all of Fargo, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents.The funeral is 2pm Wednesday, September 9 at Zion Lutheran Church, Edgeley with Pastor Alan Eppen officiating. Visitation is 3-8pm Tuesday with a prayer service at 7pm all at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church.
